The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France, is Europe’s leading neutron science facility, welcoming more than 2000 visiting scientists annually to conduct world-class research. Within the Projects and Techniques Division, the Neutron Optics Service is seeking a Vacuum Deposition Technician to join the Multilayers group.
The successful candidate will contribute to the production of multilayer mirrors through thin-film vacuum deposition and support the development of neutron optical components used in advanced scientific instruments.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce multilayer mirrors using an automated thin-film deposition system developed in-house.
- Ensure process traceability by recording parameters for each deposition run.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and correct process issues by characterizing deposited mirrors.
- Perform maintenance and continuous improvement of deposition machines.
- Assist in the design, assembly, and integration of neutron optical components.
- Support technical developments aimed at improving manufacturing processes, equipment, and characterization methods.
Candidate Profile
- Bachelor’s degree (Level 6 qualification) in a relevant technical field such as mechanical, production, or materials engineering.
- Strong background in mechanics including design, assembly, and special-purpose machinery.
- Hands-on technical approach and motivation to maintain daily production processes.
- Interest in or knowledge of vacuum techniques (especially high-vacuum plasma deposition), precision mechanics, electrical engineering, automation, and nanoscale materials science.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively while adhering to safety and regulatory standards.
