Zewail City for Science and Technology is seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Engineer specializing in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) to support advanced microscopy facilities at the Center for Imaging and Microscopy. This role supports cutting-edge research in materials science, nanotechnology, chemistry, and physics by ensuring the reliable operation and maintenance of advanced TEM instrumentation.

Key Responsibilities

TEM Operation & Alignment

  • Operate advanced TEM/STEM systems and analytical tools such as EELS, EDX, and in-situ holders.
  • Perform electron-optical alignments including gun alignment, condenser alignment, astigmatism correction, pivot point alignment, and camera alignment.
  • Optimize imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopy modes for diverse experimental needs.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electronic, vacuum, mechanical, and software issues affecting microscope performance.
  • Coordinate scheduled preventive maintenance and vendor service visits.
  • Maintain detailed logs of instrument performance and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure proper vacuum integrity, filament health, and high-voltage stability.

User Support & Training

  • Train graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty on TEM operation and best practices.
  • Provide guidance on experimental design and imaging conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols related to high-voltage and vacuum systems.

Facility Management

  • Oversee daily TEM facility operations including scheduling and access management.
  • Assist with installation and commissioning of new microscopy equipment.
  • Support grant-funded research by ensuring reliable instrument performance and uptime.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nanotechnology, or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with Transmission Electron Microscopy and instrument alignment.
  • Strong understanding of electron optics, vacuum systems, detectors, and imaging physics.
  • Experience with TEM data acquisition software and digital camera systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with STEM, EELS, EDX, or in-situ TEM techniques.
  • Familiarity with microscope platforms from manufacturers such as Thermo Fisher/FEI or JEOL.
  • Experience working in shared research facilities or microscopy centers.
