Job Description

Organization: Aalto University

Faculty/Department/Division: School of Science, Department of Applied Physics, Quantum Dynamics (QD) Group

Location: Otaniemi Campus, Espoo, Finland

Position: Postdoctoral Researcher in Organic Electronics / Plasmonics

Project Overview

The Quantum Dynamics (QD) group at Aalto University is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to advance the control of emission properties in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using nanoparticles embedded within the devices.

The project combines advanced nanofabrication techniques, including electron-beam lithography and OLED fabrication through evaporation and solution processing, with sophisticated optical and electrical characterization methods such as Fourier-plane imaging.

The research aims to develop nanoparticle array geometries that improve OLED performance while providing precise control over emission properties such as polarization, colour, and angular distribution. The project also involves extracting lossy modes from the devices and developing a deeper understanding of the underlying physical systems.

An additional goal is to support the commercialization of the research results, with a particular focus on significantly increasing OLED efficiency while maintaining precise control over their emission properties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop novel nanoparticle array geometries for improved OLED device performance.
  • Design, fabricate and experimentally characterize OLED devices.
  • Perform nano- and OLED fabrication using advanced departmental infrastructure and the Micronova cleanroom.
  • Conduct optical and electrical characterization using advanced experimental instruments.
  • Work with the QD group’s optics laboratory and its specialized OLED characterization facilities.
  • Collaborate closely with theorists who study nanostructures and device optimization through simulations.
  • Investigate and control specific OLED emission properties, including polarization, colour and angular distribution.
  • Extract lossy modes from OLED devices and contribute to advanced understanding of the system.
  • Disseminate research results through scientific publications and other appropriate channels.
  • Contribute to research directed toward commercialization of the developed technology.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD degree in a suitable field, or expectation of obtaining the degree soon.
  • Excellent research record.
  • Hands-on experience in nano- and OLED fabrication.
  • Experience in characterization and electronics.
  • Strong experimental skills and understanding of organic electronics and nanophotonics.
  • Good command of written and spoken English.
  • Demonstrated ability to disseminate scientific results.
  • Motivation to conduct research at a high international level.

Finnish language proficiency is not required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong practical experience with nanofabrication and OLED device fabrication.
  • Experience with advanced optical characterization and nanophotonic systems.
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary research environments involving experimental and theoretical researchers.
  • Interest in translating research outcomes toward commercial applications.

Employment Details

The position is offered initially as a 2-year postdoctoral contract at Aalto University.
