Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for Excellence Doctoral Student positions in Nanoscience and Nanotechnologies. These highly competitive PhD positions provide selected candidates with independent funding, allowing them to choose their research group and doctoral project within the broad field of nanoscience and nanotechnology at Chalmers.
Nanoscience research at Chalmers spans a wide range of fundamental and applied topics exploring unique physical and chemical phenomena at the nanoscale and translating them into advanced technologies. The Excellence PhD program enables outstanding students to design their own research path while collaborating with leading research groups in the Nano Area of Advance.
Research Scope
The selected candidates will conduct research within one of the many nanoscience research groups at Chalmers. Research topics may include nanoscale materials, nanofabrication, nanoelectronics, quantum materials, photonics, nanomedicine, energy materials, or other related areas in nanotechnology.
Research Responsibilities
- Develop an independent PhD research project in nanoscience or nanotechnology.
- Join a research group within the Nano Area of Advance and coordinate a doctoral program with the host laboratory.
- Take advanced doctoral courses within the selected department’s graduate school.
- Develop scientific concepts and communicate research results through publications and presentations.
- Participate in teaching or other departmental duties corresponding to approximately 20% of working hours.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree (120 credits) or equivalent in natural sciences or engineering.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in nanoscience or nanotechnology-related research areas.
Employment Conditions
- Fully funded doctoral position for 4 years, extendable up to 5 years with teaching duties.
- Starting salary: 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 2025).
- The position must begin before the end of 2026.
- Doctoral studies require physical presence at Chalmers throughout the study period.
