PhD Position in Electrochemical Device Development

Job Description

Organization: KU Leuven – Department of Materials Engineering (SIEM Research Group)

The Surface and Interface Engineered Materials (SIEM) research group at KU Leuven is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to work on innovative electrocatalytic materials for next-generation electrolyzer technologies. The research aims to integrate hydrogen production with the electrochemical conversion of waste plastics into valuable chemical feedstocks.

The SIEM group conducts research in biomaterials, nanomaterials, powder metallurgy, ceramics, thin film materials, electrochemistry, and energy storage and conversion technologies.

Research Project

The project focuses on designing and developing multimetallic electrocatalysts for advanced electrochemical systems that combine hydrogen production with plastic waste conversion. The work will involve systematic experimental studies complemented by theoretical collaborations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and synthesize multimetallic electrocatalysts.
  • Perform electrochemical testing and device development.
  • Conduct product analysis and materials characterization using advanced techniques.
  • Review relevant scientific literature and contribute to technical discussions within the research team.
  • Generate fundamental insights into sustainable electrochemical energy conversion systems.
  • Prepare research publications and disseminate results.

Candidate Profile

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Knowledge or experience in catalysis, nanoscience, or electrochemistry is desirable.
  • Strong motivation for scientific research and collaborative teamwork.
  • Good communication and networking skills.

What KU Leuven Offers

  • A fully funded 4-year PhD scholarship.
  • A collaborative and dynamic research environment within the SIEM research group.
  • Access to advanced experimental facilities in materials engineering and electrochemistry.
  • Opportunity to live and work in Leuven, Belgium, a historic and international academic hub in Europe.
