Two PhD Positions in Degradable Polymers with In-situ Optical Sensing (HyFINE Initiative)

Job Description

Organization: University of Twente – Department of Molecules and Materials

The University of Twente invites applications for two PhD positions focused on the development of degradable polymers with in-situ optical sensing technologies. The positions are part of the GroenvermogenNL HyFINE initiative, a national consortium aimed at transforming chemical manufacturing towards climate-neutral and circular production systems.

The project aims to design sustainable polymers for consumer and industrial applications by replacing fossil-based feedstocks with renewable resources and enabling controlled degradation pathways.

Research Responsibilities

  • Develop and synthesize degradable polymers using green chemistry approaches.
  • Modify polymer structures using hydrogen, electrons, and photon-driven chemical transformations.
  • Study structure–degradation relationships between polymer molecular structures and biodegradability.
  • Optimize light sources for controlled polymer degradation.
  • Develop in-situ optical sensing platforms using techniques such as UV–Vis and Raman spectroscopy to monitor degradation processes.
  • Collaborate with industrial partners including BASF and SULIS Polymers.
  • Prepare research publications and present findings in scientific conferences.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or a related field.
  • Strong experimental background in polymer synthesis and organic chemistry.
  • Knowledge or interest in optics and spectroscopic sensing techniques.
  • Strong motivation for research and innovation in sustainable materials.
  • Fluent in English and able to work in interdisciplinary research teams.

Research Environment

The project will be conducted at the University of Twente within the Sustainable Polymer Chemistry and Hybrid Materials for Opto-electronics groups. The research environment includes collaborations with industrial partners and access to state-of-the-art facilities.

Employment Conditions

  • Two full-time PhD positions for 4 years.
  • Salary according to the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement (CAO-NU): €3,059 – €3,881 per month.
  • Professional development through the Graduate School Twente.
  • Holiday allowance (8%) and end-of-year bonus (8.3%).
  • Access to campus facilities including sports and recreational activities.
  • Support for relocation and immigration.
