The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France, is Europe’s leading neutron science facility, welcoming more than 2000 visiting scientists annually to conduct world-class research. Within the Projects and Techniques Division, the Neutron Optics Service is seeking a Vacuum Deposition Technician to join the Multilayers group.

The successful candidate will contribute to the production of multilayer mirrors through thin-film vacuum deposition and support the development of neutron optical components used in advanced scientific instruments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce multilayer mirrors using an automated thin-film deposition system developed in-house.
  • Ensure process traceability by recording parameters for each deposition run.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and correct process issues by characterizing deposited mirrors.
  • Perform maintenance and continuous improvement of deposition machines.
  • Assist in the design, assembly, and integration of neutron optical components.
  • Support technical developments aimed at improving manufacturing processes, equipment, and characterization methods.

Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree (Level 6 qualification) in a relevant technical field such as mechanical, production, or materials engineering.
  • Strong background in mechanics including design, assembly, and special-purpose machinery.
  • Hands-on technical approach and motivation to maintain daily production processes.
  • Interest in or knowledge of vacuum techniques (especially high-vacuum plasma deposition), precision mechanics, electrical engineering, automation, and nanoscale materials science.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while adhering to safety and regulatory standards.

What ILL Offers

  • Permanent position in a multicultural scientific environment.
  • Location in Grenoble, France, a major European research hub in the French Alps.
  • Generous benefits including relocation assistance, expatriation allowance, health coverage, and productivity bonuses.
