The research will focus on revealing surface and subsurface structural dynamics of electrocatalysts during operation to improve catalyst performance and durability.

The project combines advanced electron microscopy with artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to reconstruct, analyse, and interpret large 4D STEM datasets under low-dose imaging conditions. Deep learning models will enhance image reconstruction, while machine learning algorithms will identify structural defects and correlate them with catalytic activity.

Research Areas

4D Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (4D STEM)

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Atomic-scale Materials Characterisation

Electrocatalysis and Clean Energy Materials

Nanomaterials for Net-Zero Technologies

Supervisors

Dr Peng Wang

Prof. Sai Gu

Essential Qualifications

First-class or strong upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related field.

Knowledge of solid-state physics, nanomaterials, or catalytic materials.

Hands-on laboratory or computational experience in microscopy or image/data analysis.

Strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills.

Excellent written and verbal scientific communication skills.

Strong interest in advanced microscopy, sustainable energy materials, and emerging imaging technologies.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience with electron microscopy.

Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or machine learning frameworks.

Background in catalysis or beam-sensitive functional materials.

Funding

Fully funded 4-year PhD studentship.

Tax-free UKRI stipend of £21,805 per year (2026/27 rate).

Full tuition fees.

Research Training Support Grant.

Three-month placement with industry, research collaborators, or policymakers.

Eligibility

This opportunity is available only to applicants who qualify for UK Home fee status.
