The research will explore how twisted photonic crystal structures can be designed to generate robust optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum.<\/p>\n<p>The PhD candidate will combine theoretical and numerical modelling with experimental fabrication and optical characterisation. The project brings together expertise from the University of Namur, IMEC and INESC MN, providing interdisciplinary training in numerical photonics, nanofabrication and structured-light characterisation.<\/p>\n<h3>Research Objectives<\/h3>\n<p>The research will investigate twisted bilayer photonic crystals and their potential for structured-light generation. Key objectives include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Designing twisted photonic crystal structures capable of generating optical vortices.<\/li>\n<li>Investigating the photonic band structures of twisted photonic platforms.<\/li>\n<li>Studying optical modes and light propagation in moir\u00e9 photonic systems.<\/li>\n<li>Developing numerical models and simulations for twisted photonic crystals.<\/li>\n<li>Exploring robust vortex radiation carrying orbital angular momentum.<\/li>\n<li>Connecting theoretical predictions with experimental fabrication and optical characterisation.<\/li>\n<li>Contributing to the SPARK Doctoral Network objective of developing metamaterial-enabled structured-light generation through controlled angular momentum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key Responsibilities<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Perform theoretical and numerical calculations related to twisted photonic crystals.<\/li>\n<li>Develop and apply numerical simulation methods for photonic structures.<\/li>\n<li>Design photonic crystal configurations for optical vortex generation.<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to the fabrication of nanophotonic structures during the project.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in experimental optical characterisation of structured light.<\/li>\n<li>Analyse and interpret numerical and experimental results.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with researchers at the University of Namur, IMEC and INESC MN.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in secondments and training activities organised through the SPARK doctoral network.<\/li>\n<li>Present research findings through scientific publications, conferences, workshops and network-wide events.<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to collaborative research with members of the wider SPARK consortium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Research Environment<\/h3>\n<p>The PhD will be hosted within the <strong>Micha\u00ebl Lobet Research Team<\/strong> at the NISM institute of the University of Namur. The team has expertise in theoretical and numerical physics, particularly in photonics.<\/p>\n<p>The research environment includes experienced researchers such as Prof. Micha\u00ebl Lobet, Prof. Luc Henrard, Prof. Olivier Deparis and Prof. Alexandre Mayer.<\/p>\n<p>The candidate will also benefit from collaborations with universities and research institutions including Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University, the University of Navarra, Tsinghua University and DTU.<\/p>\n<p>Close collaboration is planned with SPARK doctoral network members and with Prof. Benoit Hackens at UCLouvain.<\/p>\n<h3>Computational and Experimental Facilities<\/h3>\n<p>The research team has access to high-performance computing resources through the CECI consortium, including CPU and GPU-accelerated facilities. Additional access is available to regional Tier-1 supercomputing resources and EuroHPC initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>The laboratory has developed and uses numerical approaches including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rigorous coupled-wave analysis.<\/li>\n<li>Plane-wave expansion methods.<\/li>\n<li>Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods.<\/li>\n<li>MEEP.<\/li>\n<li>MPB.<\/li>\n<li>Lumerical FDTD.<\/li>\n<li>COMSOL Multiphysics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The candidate will also gain access to advanced fabrication and characterisation facilities through <strong>IMEC<\/strong> and <strong>INESC MN<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Secondments<\/h3>\n<p>The doctoral project includes international research secondments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>3 months at IMEC, Belgium:<\/strong> Exposure to nanofabrication of photonic structures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>6 months at INESC MN, Portugal:<\/strong> Structured-light characterisation using off-axis digital holography.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These secondments will provide practical experience complementary to the theoretical and numerical research undertaken at the University of Namur.<\/p>\n<h3>Eligibility Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>Applicants should have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Master&#8217;s degree in Physics, Astrophysics, Applied Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering or a closely related field.<\/li>\n<li>No doctoral degree at the time of recruitment.<\/li>\n<li>Strong English-language skills.<\/li>\n<li>The ability and willingness to work collaboratively with researchers from external institutions.<\/li>\n<li>An autonomous and transparent approach to research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Expertise in photonics, numerical methods, scientific computing, high-performance computing, nanofabrication or optical characterisation is considered an asset but is not mandatory.<\/p>\n<h3>MSCA Mobility Requirement<\/h3>\n<p>Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity, including work or studies, in <strong>Belgium for more than 12 months during the 36 months immediately preceding recruitment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This mobility condition is part of the eligibility requirements of the MSCA funding programme.<\/p>\n<h3>Funding and Benefits<\/h3>\n<p>The position is funded through the <strong>SPARK MSCA Doctoral Network<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately <strong>\u20ac3,000 gross per month<\/strong> starting salary.<\/li>\n<li>Potential mobility allowance of approximately <strong>\u20ac700 per month<\/strong>, depending on eligibility.<\/li>\n<li>Potential family allowance of approximately <strong>\u20ac650 per month<\/strong>, depending on family status.<\/li>\n<li>36 months of funding through the SPARK MSCA network.<\/li>\n<li>Additional 12 months of funding from the University of Namur to complete the four-year thesis.<\/li>\n<li>Employee benefits associated with the additional UNamur funding period.<\/li>\n<li>6-month research stay at INESC MN in Portugal.<\/li>\n<li>3-month research stay at IMEC in Belgium.<\/li>\n<li>Research-specific and transferable-skills training.<\/li>\n<li>Participation in workshops, conferences and network-wide events.<\/li>\n<li>International and multidisciplinary research experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Starting Date<\/h3>\n<p>The expected recruitment period is between <strong>1 February 2027 and 1 May 2027<\/strong>.
