Its scientists, engineers, and technical experts work to accelerate energy innovation through advanced research, systems integration, and collaboration.

NLR provides a multidisciplinary research environment supported by state-of-the-art facilities and partnerships with industry, academia, and other national laboratories. Its research spans foundational science, applied systems engineering, and analysis, with a focus on developing advanced, secure, reliable, and cost-effective energy solutions.

Position Overview

An experimental postdoctoral research position is available in NLR’s Materials Discovery and Development group, focusing on the synthesis and characterization of thin-film nitride materials using physical vapour deposition, particularly sputtering.

The successful candidate will contribute to collaborative basic-science and applied-development projects investigating emerging nitride thin films for applications in semiconductors, ultrawide-bandgap semiconductors, piezoelectric and ferroelectric materials, and radiation detectors.

One of the major projects supported by this position is NLR’s next-generation autonomous semiconductor development suite, established through the U.S. Department of Energy’s METALLIC platform. This initiative aims to accelerate the discovery of advanced thin-film inorganic semiconductor materials and address critical U.S. supply-chain challenges, with particular emphasis on semiconductor technologies involving gallium, germanium, scandium, and other critical elements and materials.

The researcher will contribute to developing sputter-deposition processes and characterization workflows using this autonomous semiconductor development suite. Additional projects will involve designing, developing, and testing novel ultrawide-bandgap nitride materials for radiation-detection and piezoelectric/ferroelectric devices.

Key Responsibilities

Design and conduct thin-film synthesis and materials-characterization experiments.

Develop and optimize sputter-deposition processes for advanced nitride materials.

Contribute to projects involving autonomous semiconductor development and high-throughput experimental research.

Investigate novel ultrawide-bandgap nitride materials for radiation detection and piezoelectric/ferroelectric applications.

Collaborate with scientists and engineers at NLR and partner institutions.

Prepare and present research findings at conferences and internal meetings.

Publish research outcomes in scientific journals and other relevant publications.

Set up, maintain, and improve existing experimental equipment.

Develop and improve data-collection and analysis tools.

Research Environment and Opportunities

The successful candidate will work within a collaborative research environment focused on advanced inorganic thin films and semiconductor materials. The position offers opportunities to contribute to emerging materials-discovery approaches, including autonomous and high-throughput experimentation, and to work with advanced synthesis and characterization facilities.

Salary and Benefits

The annual salary range for this full-time, 40-hour-per-week position is $76,600–$126,400. The final salary will depend on factors including education, training, experience, quality and quantity of work, market conditions, and internal compensation considerations.

Benefits include:

Medical, dental, and vision insurance.

Short-term disability insurance.

Pension benefits, subject to eligibility.

403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer matching.

Life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance.

Paid time off, sick leave, and paid holidays.

Potential eligibility for performance-, merit-, and achievement-based awards.

Relocation expense reimbursement may be available for eligible positions.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit an application for this specific position. Applications are not retained for consideration for future vacancies.

The application must include:

Cover letter.

Resume.

Additional Employment Requirements

DOE Access and Background Investigation: NLR is subject to U.S. Department of Energy access restrictions. Employees must be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card under Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), which requires a favourable background investigation.

Drug-Free Workplace: NLR maintains a drug-free workplace in accordance with federal law. Candidates offered employment must pass a pre-employment drug test before commencing work. The test may include marijuana, and a positive result may lead to withdrawal of the employment offer.

Equal Employment Opportunity

The National Laboratory of the Rockies is an equal opportunity employer.
