Organization: CERIC-ERIC (Central European Research Infrastructure Consortium)
CERIC-ERIC is offering a PhD position in Experimental Physics as part of the research project LEMIS – Analysis and Imaging of Light Elements in Materials of Importance to Energy Storage using Ion Beams. The project focuses on advancing Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) techniques for the characterization of materials used in energy storage technologies.
The successful candidate will contribute to upgrading and optimizing an ion microprobe setup used for elemental analysis and imaging of energy storage materials, particularly focusing on detecting light elements and monitoring electrochemical processes.
Research Environment
- Primary research will take place at the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI), Laboratory for Ion Beam Interactions, Experimental Physics Division in Zagreb, Croatia.
- Part of the experimental work will also be conducted at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, a partner facility within the CERIC-ERIC consortium.
Key Responsibilities
- Upgrade and optimize the ion microprobe setup at RBI.
- Apply Ion Beam Analysis techniques for the elemental characterization of energy storage materials.
- Conduct experimental research focusing on light element detection and electrochemical process monitoring.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams across CERIC partner facilities.
Candidate Requirements
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics.
- Eligibility to enroll in a PhD program in Physics (GPA at least 80% of the maximum possible score).
- Experience with experimental physics methodologies.
- Fluent English (minimum B2 level).
Additional Qualifications (Preferred)
- Experience with Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) techniques.
- Knowledge of materials analysis.
- Programming experience (Python, MATLAB, or similar).
- Strong interest in experimental research and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Contract & Benefits
- Duration: 48 months.
- Benefits include 33 days of annual leave and flexible working hours.
- Training opportunities and partial remote work options.
This position offers the opportunity to work within a major European research infrastructure and collaborate with leading facilities in materials science, nanotechnology, and energy storage research.
