Job Description

Postdoctoral Position in Electrochemistry of Layered Thin-Film Oxides

Institution: Rowland Institute at Harvard University
University: Harvard University
School: Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Research Groups: Wahab Lab and Mundy Lab
Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States

Position Overview

The Wahab Lab at the Rowland Institute at Harvard, in collaboration with the Mundy Lab at Harvard Physics, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to investigate multiscale (macro-to-nano) electrocatalysis and operando spectroscopy of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown thin-film oxides.

The research focuses on understanding and developing layered thin-film oxide materials through advanced synthesis, electrochemical characterization and operando techniques. The successful candidate will contribute to materials synthesis, experimental technique development, electrochemical characterization and data analysis.

The position is suited to a rigorous scientist with expertise in at least two relevant research areas, including thin-film fabrication, molecular beam epitaxy, electrocatalysis, electrochemistry, surface characterization, operando spectroscopy, electrochemical scanning probe microscopy or machine learning for materials discovery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on multiscale electrocatalysis and operando spectroscopy of MBE-grown thin-film oxides.
  • Contribute to materials synthesis and the development of experimental techniques.
  • Perform electrochemical characterization and analyse experimental data.
  • Lead independent research projects within the collaborative research environment.
  • Mentor undergraduate researchers.
  • Prepare and publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Present research results at scientific conferences.
  • Contribute to the development of research activities within the Wahab Lab and the collaborating Mundy Lab.

Required Research Expertise

Candidates should demonstrate expertise in two or more of the following areas:

  • Thin-film fabrication and molecular beam epitaxy.
  • Electrocatalysis and electrochemistry.
  • Surface characterization using spectroscopy or electron microscopy.
  • Operando spectroscopy.
  • Electrochemical scanning probe microscopy.
  • Machine learning for materials discovery.

Experience in computational materials modelling and related characterization techniques will also be advantageous.

Employment Terms and Compensation

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position.

  • Starting annual salary: $67,600.
  • Postdoctoral salary range: $67,600–$80,000 annually.
  • Initial contract: One year, with the possibility of extension.
  • Expected start: Flexible, beginning November 2026.
  • Benefits: Eligible for Harvard University employee benefits.

The final salary offered will depend on factors including experience, training, qualifications, field of scholarship and professional accomplishments.

Application Requirements

The complete application package should include:

  1. Curriculum Vitae: An updated academic CV detailing education, research experience and achievements.
  2. Cover Letter: Explain relevant expertise, previous research experience and suitability for the advertised position.
  3. Statement of Research: Outline relevant research experience, alignment with the laboratory’s research focus and future research plans.
  4. List of References: Contact details for three academic or professional references.
  5. Publication Samples (Optional): Representative publications may be submitted as supplementary documents.

Applicants should provide three letters of recommendation as part of the complete application package, as specified in the position instructions.
