Job Description

Organization: University of Warwick

Faculty/Department/Division: WMG – International Institute for Nanocomposites Manufacturing (IINM), Advanced Elastomer Research Group

Location: Coventry, United Kingdom

Position: PhD Studentship – From Nanointerfaces to Dynamic Performance: Next Generation Elastomer Technologies

Project Overview

  • This PhD project focuses on developing next-generation elastomer technologies for sustainable mobility and future tyre applications.
  • Sponsored by a global tyre industry partner, the research addresses tyre-wear particle emissions, emerging Euro 7 requirements, lower embodied carbon, extended service life, self-healing, adaptiveness, and reprocessability.
  • The project will investigate nanoparticle surface chemistry, polymer–filler interfaces, and advanced characterisation to establish fundamental microstructure–property relationships.
  • Carbon-based and hybrid nanomaterials will be explored to improve reinforcement and multifunctionality while reducing energy loss and improving long-term performance.
  • The project integrates polymer chemistry, nanotechnology, materials characterisation, and dynamic performance analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate nanoparticle surface chemistry and polymer–filler interfaces.
  • Explore carbon-based and hybrid nanomaterials for advanced elastomer applications.
  • Conduct advanced materials characterisation and structural analysis.
  • Develop microstructure–property relationships for elastomer systems.
  • Apply rheological and dynamic mechanical analysis techniques.
  • Use solid-state NMR and time-resolved structural characterisation.
  • Contribute to research aimed at developing sustainable, high-performance elastomers.

Required Qualifications

  • Highly motivated candidate with or expecting to obtain a 1st or upper 2nd class MSc, MChem, or BSc.
  • Background in chemistry, polymer science, or chemical engineering.
  • Understanding and experience in chemical synthesis.
  • Experience or knowledge of analytical chemistry.
  • Experience or knowledge of structure characterisation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in chemistry, polymers, elastomers, nanomaterials, rheology, or advanced materials characterisation.
  • Strong time-management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to meet deadlines reliably.
  • Excellent academic writing, communication, and presentation skills.
