Job Description

Organization: University of Southampton

Faculty/Department: Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences; School of Electronics and Computer Science

Location: Southampton, United Kingdom

Position: Postgraduate Research Project – PhD in 2D Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Nanoelectronic Devices for Neuromorphic Computing

Project Overview

The University of Southampton is offering a postgraduate research project focused on developing transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC)-based nanoelectronic devices for energy-efficient neuromorphic computing. The project forms part of the EPSRC EXPRESS Programme Grant (Exploiting Single Source Precursors for the Electrochemical Growth of Functional 1D and 2D Metal Dichalcogenide Semiconductors), an interdisciplinary research programme led jointly by the Universities of Southampton and Warwick.

Layered TMDC semiconductors are promising materials for next-generation electronics because of their atomically thin structures, tunable bandgaps and distinctive electronic properties. The research will investigate the fabrication, characterisation and optimisation of TMDC-based transistors and memristive devices, using electrodeposited TMDC materials developed within the EXPRESS programme.

The project aims to demonstrate device functionalities relevant to neuromorphic information processing, including synaptic plasticity, threshold switching and memristive behaviour. These technologies could contribute to computing architectures inspired by biological neural systems, with potential benefits for energy efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and fabricate TMDC-based nanoelectronic devices, including transistors and memristive devices.
  • Investigate the electrical and electronic properties of transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors.
  • Perform device measurements and advanced materials characterisation.
  • Characterise and optimise device performance for neuromorphic computing applications.
  • Explore device functionalities such as synaptic plasticity, threshold switching and memristive behaviour.
  • Work with researchers in chemistry, physics and electronic engineering.
  • Collaborate with researchers across the EXPRESS consortium and contribute to interdisciplinary research activities.
  • Present research findings at conferences and engage with academic and industrial partners.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • A UK 2:1 honours degree, or an international equivalent, in Electronic Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or a closely related discipline.
  • A strong interest in nanoelectronics, semiconductor devices or emerging computing technologies.
  • The ability to meet the University of Southampton’s applicable postgraduate research admission requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Relevant knowledge or experience in the following areas may be beneficial:

  • Nanoelectronics and semiconductor device physics.
  • Nanofabrication and electronic device measurement.
  • Materials characterisation and electrical testing.
  • Emerging computing technologies, including neuromorphic systems.

Specific additional experience requirements are not stated on the project page.

Research Environment and Training

The successful candidate will join a collaborative research environment at the University of Southampton, with access to cleanroom facilities, device fabrication tools and advanced electrical characterisation laboratories.

The project offers interdisciplinary training and opportunities to collaborate with researchers across the EXPRESS consortium, present findings at international conferences, and engage with academic and industrial partners.
