Project Overview

Materials science and technology are Empa’s core areas of focus. With approximately 1,100 employees, Empa conducts cutting-edge research that contributes to societal well-being and a sustainable future. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

This position is part of an interdisciplinary SNSF Sinergia research project involving three Swiss partner institutions. The project aims to investigate plasmonic enhancement of near-infrared (NIR)-emitting organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) and improve the understanding and performance of next-generation NIR optoelectronic devices.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research environment combining expertise in theory, nanoparticle science, OLED technology, and organic chemistry. The role also involves close collaboration with two ongoing PhD projects focused on OLED science and chemical synthesis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, optimize, and characterize near-infrared-emitting OLED devices.
  • Collaborate closely and exchange scientific knowledge with project partners.
  • Analyze, interpret, and document experimental results.
  • Prepare and publish scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research findings at international conferences and scientific meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Strong background in OLEDs, organic electronics, optoelectronics, or photonics.
  • Practical experience fabricating and characterizing thin-film optoelectronic devices.
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary research and collaborative projects.
  • Motivated, proactive, and enthusiastic approach to research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with near-infrared-emitting devices.
  • Experience with plasmonics or nanophotonics.

These areas are described as highly desirable rather than mandatory.
