About the Nanobiotechnology Laboratory

The Nanobiotechnology Laboratory of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) is one of Europe’s leading hubs for interdisciplinary nanoscience. Equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, the lab specializes in nanomaterials characterization, nanomedicine research, micro(nano)plastic detection, and advanced material studies  bridging physics, chemistry, and biology to address modern challenges in health, food, and environment.

Its research team includes top experts in nanobiosciences, material science, and biotechnology — offering a unique ecosystem for hands-on nanotechnology training.

Training Topics & Research Focus

🔹 Topic 1: Micro(nano)plastics Detection & Characterisation

Participants will learn hands-on sample preparation, SEM and µRaman spectroscopy, pyrolysis GC-MS, and TOC analysis to identify and quantify micro(nano)plastics in food, water, and soil. The module also introduces plastic ageing studies and surface morphology evaluation.

🔹 Topic 2: Nanomaterials in Food & Novel Ingredients

This section focuses on nanomaterial extraction and characterization (IHAT, TiO₂, nanocellulose) and the study of contaminants formed during thermal food processing. Participants will use DLS, sp-ICP-MS, TEM, and LC-MS techniques for comprehensive analysis.

🔹 Topic 3: Nanomedicine Synthesis & Advanced Characterisation

Participants will synthesize and evaluate liposomal and lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulations, including mRNA delivery systems. Techniques covered include DLS, cryo-TEM, asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation, and liquid chromatography, with insights into EU nanomedicine regulations.

🔹 Topic 4: 3D Bioprinting & Imaging Techniques

Hands-on 3D bioprinting sessions covering cell-polymer preparation, printing, and microscopy-based characterization (SEM & CLSM). Optional modules include nanomaterial imaging in 2D intestine models for nanosafety evaluation.

A dedicated session by CERIC-ERIC will introduce open-access opportunities to EU research facilities, fostering collaboration and future project development.
