About the Workshop

The Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) Workshop at IIT Ropar offers participants a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals and applications of thin film deposition for advanced materials research. Supported by DST-FIST, this workshop bridges theoretical understanding with practical, hands-on sessions using IIT Ropar’s high-end PLD facility.

PLD is a cutting-edge thin-film fabrication method widely used in nanotechnology, condensed matter physics, and material engineering. This training introduces participants to the system’s components, working principles, and optimization strategies for multilayer heterostructures.

Workshop Highlights

Participants will gain exposure to:

  • 248 nm high-energy laser with a peak energy of 400 mJ

  • 6-target carousel for multilayer heterostructure fabrication

  • Substrate heating up to 800°C with rotation control for uniform film growth

  • Turbo-molecular pump with oil-free rotary operation

  • Practical demonstrations of thin film synthesis and characterization

This program emphasizes hands-on laboratory experience, offering participants a rare opportunity to operate PLD systems and understand real-time growth processes.
