About the Steinmetz Lab

Located at UC San Diego, the Steinmetz Lab is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in nanotechnology-based immunotherapy. By harnessing plant viruses as multifunctional nanoplatforms, the lab designs novel materials capable of displaying epitopes and acting as immunological adjuvants, opening new frontiers in cancer and cardiovascular disease treatment.


Research Focus

This position focuses on cancer and cardiovascular immunotherapy using plant virus nanoparticles. These unique biomaterials integrate nanoscience, molecular biology, and immunology to create therapeutic strategies with high translational potential.

The lab offers a highly collaborative environment, bridging materials science, chemistry, biology, and medicine, with access to UC San Diego’s state-of-the-art core facilities.


Role & Responsibilities

  • Conduct experimental research in nanomedicine and immunotherapy

  • Design, clone, and engineer virus-based nanostructures for therapeutic applications

  • Perform molecular biology and cloning experiments

  • Execute multi-color flow cytometry for immunological profiling

  • Conduct animal work in cancer or cardiovascular models

  • Prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals

  • Present research at national and international conferences

  • Participate in grant and fellowship writing, and develop project management skills


Required Qualifications

  • PhD in nanotechnology, biotechnology, immunology, chemistry, biomedical/chemical engineering, or a related field

  • Strong background in molecular biology, cloning, and immunology

  • Experience with multi-color flow cytometry

  • Experience in animal work (cancer or cardiovascular models)

  • Demonstrated creativity and passion for translational science

Note: Prior postdoctoral experience is not required and not preferred.
