About the Lab

The Peter Grünberg Institute – Quantum Nanoscience (PGI-3) is a world leader in quantum nanoscience research, aiming to unlock quantum-coherent functionality of nanostructures. This PhD role is part of the ERC Starting Grant QuSINT, focusing on building artificial quantum architectures from single atoms and molecules, and studying qubit systems at the atomic scale.


What You’ll Do

  • Operate millikelvin scanning probe microscopes under ultra-high vacuum.

  • Investigate atomic and molecular spin/qubit systems with spectroscopic methods.

  • Fabricate and analyze quantum nanostructures with engineered spin states.

  • Develop novel nanoscale quantum sensors for detecting electric and magnetic fields.

  • Publish research in leading journals and present findings at international conferences.


Who Succeeds Here

Ideal candidates are:

  • Master’s graduates in Physics, Nanoscience, Chemistry, or related areas.

  • Skilled in solid state physics, quantum magnetism, surface science, or nanoscience.

  • Experienced in experimental lab techniques and scientific programming (Python).

  • Curious, motivated, and eager to think beyond conventional approaches.

  • Fluent in English, with prior experience in scanning probe microscopy (a plus).
