Postdoctoral Researcher in Electrocatalysis at ETH Zurich: A Prestigious Opportunity in Sustainable Energy Research
Are you a passionate scientist eager to make a real impact on the future of sustainable energy? ETH Zurich, one of the world’s leading universities for science and technology, is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Electrocatalysis at its renowned Electrochemical Energy Systems Laboratory. This is a full-time, fixed-term position based in Zurich, Switzerland, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025, or later..
About the Electrochemical Energy Systems Laboratory
Located within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, the Electrochemical Energy Systems Laboratory is at the forefront of research into advanced electrochemical processes. The lab’s primary focus is on understanding how complex electrolyte environments affect the reaction kinetics and product selectivity of the electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) and related electrocatalytic processes. The group is dedicated to generating mechanistic insights using a suite of sophisticated, in-situ characterization tools, and is driven by the goal of developing innovative solutions for the global energy transition.
The Research Focus: Tackling the CO₂ Challenge
Electrochemical CO₂ reduction is a promising pathway for converting carbon dioxide—a major greenhouse gas—into valuable chemicals and fuels. However, the process is highly complex, with many factors influencing efficiency and selectivity. The Electrochemical Energy Systems Laboratory is tackling these challenges head-on by:
Exploring complex electrolytes: Investigating how different electrolyte compositions and structures affect the performance of electrocatalysts.
Mechanistic studies: Using advanced analytical techniques to unravel the fundamental steps and intermediates involved in CO₂RR and related reactions.
Innovative characterization: Employing in-situ methods such as FTIR spectroscopy, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS), and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) to monitor reactions in real time.
This research is not only scientifically fascinating but also has the potential to revolutionize how we approach carbon management and renewable energy storage..
Your Role as a Postdoctoral Researcher
As a postdoctoral researcher in this group, you will play a central role in advancing the lab’s mission. Your key responsibilities will include:
Designing and conducting experiments to probe the influence of electrolyte environments on electrocatalytic reactions.
Utilizing and developing in-situ characterization techniques (e.g., FTIR, DEMS, EQCM) to gain mechanistic insights into reaction pathways.
Collaborating with a diverse team of scientists and engineers, both within ETH Zurich and with external partners.
Contributing to scientific publications and presenting your findings at international conferences.
Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students and helping to foster a collaborative, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating research environment.
This role offers a unique blend of hands-on experimental work, data analysis, and scientific communication, making it an ideal next step for ambitious researchers looking to establish themselves in the field of electrocatalysis.
Who Should Apply? Candidate Profile
ETH Zurich is seeking candidates who are not only technically skilled but also highly motivated and collaborative. The ideal applicant will have:
A PhD in Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field.
Hands-on experience in electrochemical CO₂ reduction or similar electrocatalytic reactions.
Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
In-situ characterization techniques (e.g., FTIR, Raman, SECM)
Online product analysis (e.g., HPLC, GC, DEMS)
Single crystal studies or automation of experimental setups
Excellent written and spoken English skills.
